Oudenbosch harbour owes its existence to the production of peat. The traders transferred the peat they produced from barges to larger ships in this harbour. Until the Elizabeth Floods in 1421 it had for centuries been possible to travel safely cross-country from Antwerp to Holland. The overland route into Holland suddenly transformed itself into an inland sea, much to the benefit of Oudenbosch and its harbour. The boat connection between Oudenbosch and Dordrecht now became a 'highway' between Holland and the Southern Netherlands.
