Gilze is known for its many initiatives to promote biodiversity. The enthusiastic owners of De Biestraatse Weide would be happy to tell you more about it. About Wouwervallei, for example, an initiative by the citizens to contribute to the recovery of natural habitats. Fitting in perfectly with the ambitions of the Van Gogh National Park, it has five hectares of pools, windbreaks and wet layers for water storage. But the Bee Deal project is fun as well, focused on improving the environment for bees and other useful insects.
Tips for an unforgettable visit: get on your bicycle and explore the rich surrounding area. The Barony of Breda is a true cycling paradise with varying landscapes, wooded areas, meadows, heathland and villages. Boswachterij Dorst and the beautiful Chaam woods are just five kilometres away, and Tilburg and Breda, where you can shop or enjoy local culture in one of the interesting museums, are also just a short bicycle ride away.
Other tips in the surrounding area are the enclave village Baarle, the Fietsallee between Breda and Alphen and the decoy airfield De Kiek (constructed during WWII as ‘Scheinflughafen Kamerun’ or ‘decoy airport Cameroon’).
