Protected city views
You can learn all about the former times of the fortified town of Bergen op Zoom during a historic city walk. For example you can visit the Markiezenhof, the largest late-Gothic city palace in Western Europe, the Synagogue dating from 1832, St Gertrude’s Church with its famous Pepper Pot Tower, or the Gevangenenpoort (Prisoners’ Gate); with remnants of the original city walls from the 14th century. The city is located on the Brabantse Wal: a protected cultural and historical nature reserve with a sudden change of height from the upper sandy soil to the lower sea clay polders. This results in picturesque alleyways and striking differences in height in the city, while you can also experience this unusual natural phenomenon on lovely cycle rides through the West Brabant countryside.
