To the northeast of Heeze you will find the Strabrechtse Heide, the largest continuous heathland area in Brabant with numerous meres, woods and sand drift areas. At first glance you might think you are seeing an immeasurable plain of only bush and heath, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Here, nature lovers can enjoy a varied landscape with beautiful views. You will pass the Beuven, the largest mere in the Netherlands. Here you will find unusual plants such as the water purslane and the carnivorous sundew. The fens are teeming with dragonflies and if you look closely you can spot the moor frog or maybe even a natterjack toad.

Tip: at Natuurpoort De Plaetse, the starting point of your cycling tour, there is a sheepfold that houses a herd of 350 Kempisch heath sheep. You can enjoy a drink or lunch at the nearby cafe De Strabrechtse Heide. Be sure to take a look at the heath garden, the insect hotel and the hives.

  • Heath sheep
The Strabrechtse Heide heath is centuries old and has not changed in all that time. It is home to some lovely and unusual animals, such as the Kempisch Heath Sheep, an old breed of sheep from before the year 1800. Characteristic are its long legs, long neck and the absence of horns. A herd of over 1000 sheep walks across the Strabrechtse Heide heath with their shepherd and dogs daily. You may come across them during your bike ride.
  • Castle Heeze
The nearby Castle Heeze is one of the most beautiful and important national monuments in the Netherlands. The castle is surrounded by a moat and has a unique location amidst the beautiful natural landscape. Over the years, the predominantly 18th-century interior of the castle has remained intact.
  • Camp Dennenlust
In the Moorsel area in Lierop, the former Dennenlust camp has been reconstructed. Seventy-five years ago more than thirty people lived in hiding here. The hiding camp was built in 1943 to accommodate students from The Hague who were wanted by the Germans during the Second World War.
