Helvoirt is located in a rural area in the middle of North Brabant. This little gem, surrounded by beautiful countryside, forms part of the Van Gogh National Park. Father Theodorus van Gogh was the minister of the Protestant church in Helvoirt from 1871-1875, and although Vincent van Gogh never lived in Helvoirt, he visited his family here on many occasions.

This typical Brabant village contains three Van Gogh Monuments: the Reformed parsonage, where the Van Gogh family lived (1871-1875), the old Reformed church (dating from the 15th century and where Vincent’s father was the minister) and the graves of Vincent’s aunt and uncle. The nearby provincial capital of Brabant, ’s-Hertogenbosch, is home to Het Noordbrabants Museum, the only place in Brabant where you can admire original Van Gogh paintings.

About the cycle route (21km)
This cycle route starts at the Vincent van Goghplein square. Visit the three Van Gogh Monuments and discover why Helvoirt was a special place for the Van Gogh family. There is nowhere else where so many members of the Van Gogh family lived (thirteen in all) as in Helvoirt. Once outside the village you can cycle right through the Groene Woud (Green Forest) National Park.

When it’s time for a break, there are plenty of comfortable, friendly places to eat or drink along the way. This route will take you to the edge of the Loon and Drunen Dunes National Park. Recommendation: cycle into the park and be surprised by the ‘Brabant Sahara’. You can make your way back to Helvoirt along the ‘IJzeren Man’ (‘Iron Man’; the longest beach in Brabant) or you can continue on your way along the Van Gogh cycle route ’s-Hertogenbosch.

How does the Van Gogh cycle route work?
The Van Gogh cycle route forms part of the cycle route network in Brabant. There is a Van Gogh cycle route sign at every intersection. Follow the Van Gogh cycle route signs from one numbered intersection to the other. Follow the cycle route network signs between the intersections. Ten short routes in the form of loops have been marked out. The routes are joined together by linking sections.

There is a stately white building opposite the Protestant church at Torenstraat 47. It is the Reformed rectory, where Vincent’s parents lived from 1871 to 1875. Vincent stayed at this rectory on several occasions and sketched the Reformed Church where his father was the preacher.
