the Bakelse bossen coniferous woodland area, covering 115 hectares. Formerly a community wood, it is now owned by Brabant Water and acts as the green lungs of the city thanks to its strategic location. The oldest parts of the woodland date to 1915. The wood is relatively weak from a biological perspective due to its origin on former drifting sand and consists of mostly Scots pine, other coniferous species and American oak. Notable features are the drift mounds, a juniper thicket, an area of open drifting sand known as ‘the shooting range’ and a small heathland area. The route through the Bakelse bossen consists mostly of single tracks. The route builders made good use of elevation to create a technical route with various short climbs.
