Story of the route
- Monastery hotel ZIN
In 1902 the friars of Tilburg bought Steenwijk House at Boxtelseweg 58-60 in Vught to establish a retirement home for elderly and sickly brothers. The house dates from 1840. It would become the basis for three monasteries: the brotherhouse H. Joachim, Huize Emanuelle and the Eleousa community.
This congregation is known especially for the great role it played in education. The brothers founded schools, worked as teachers and developed teaching methods. They did not only teach in Brabant, but also overseas, for example in Suriname. In the 1960s the brothers were joined by another order from Tilburg: the Sisters of Charity. - City Monastery San Damiano
City Monastery San Damiano is a unique collaboration of various orders within the Franciscan family. Franciscans, Capuchins, Poor Clares and members of the Third Order live together in the monastery. They each live by their own rule, yet under one roof. The Franciscan Movement, an association that propagates the ideas of Francis and Clare of Assisi in an accessible way in society, is housed in the same building. This makes City Monastery San Damiano a unique Franciscan centre.
