This, the oldest Capuchin monastery in the Netherlands (1645), was named after the Biblical place Emmaus. Apart from the windows, there is little to see on the outside of the square building that forms the monastery. A simple building with little embellishment. That fits well with the Capuchin friars, because they follow the strict teaching of Francis of Assisi. Simplicity is an important virtue for them. Over the years, it has become a lively place. Every year hundreds of pilgrims and walkers spend the night. Peace seekers attend retreats. It's a remarkable location; radio programme Vroege Vogels named it the quietest place in the Netherlands in 2018, the interior of the baroque church is among the most beautiful in the Netherlands, and the monastery garden was named the best in the country in 2019. The monastery has a beautiful refectory, where hotel guests can eat their meals. - Monastery of Saint Agatha
In the far east of the province North Brabant lies the monastery of Saint Agatha. The crosiers who live here will be celebrating their 650th anniversary in 2021. During the Eighty Years' War many religious orders had to flee their convents. Not so the crosiers; they managed to survive this period with the help of the House of Orange. After a Spanish army leader demolished the monastery to fortify a nearby castle, Prince Maurice helped the crosiers to restore it. Maurice presented the monastery with a stained glass window with his own image. For a long time the window was in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, but it was returned to the monastery church on the occasion of the monastery’s 650th anniversary in early 2021. There are guided tours and the monastery garden can be visited freely. Crosier Edgar Claes has developed the Tripel 1371, a tasty and rich monastery beer, in the monastery brewery.
