Unique and traditional
De Grenswachter is one of four bakery museums in the Netherlands. In addition to hosting workshops, the museum is also open to the public. Enjoy baking demonstrations in a wood-burning oven from 1850, or a beer tasting paired with a sausage roll workshop. The museum has developed special baking programmes for the blind and visually impaired, such as 'Baking with Feeling' and 'Feeling Sculptures'. The museum welcomes a wide variety of guests, including expats from large companies in the Brainport region, who can learn all about traditional Brabant craftsmanship from the multilingual volunteers.
Luyksgestel youth education
The museum is perfect for children. There’s plenty for them to do, with reading afternoons, egg cake baking and themed events, like 'Mill Mouse', 'Museum Treasures' and 'How the windmill spins': "We got to make our own shapes out of dough, which were then baked in a wood-burning oven. Thanks for the great afternoon, highly recommended for children.”
De Grenswachter is the winner of the 2018-2019 Bergeijk Culture Award - Luyksgestel is located in the municipality of Bergeijk – and their traditional sausage rolls have twice been voted best in Brabant. The museum is easy to reach, as it’s close to the Belgian border and has a private car park and a bus stop 150 metres away. It’s the perfect addition to visit to the Ploeg factory, designed by Gerrit Rietveld, the Mien Ruyspark and the 't Loo botanical gardens, all located in Bergeijk.
Smuggling
Mill de Grenswachter played a big role in the life of the smuggler. The mulder (miller) knew the ins and outs of the village like no other. Throughout the day, people walked in and out to grind some grain for the bread the people baked themselves. He was also aware if smugglers went out in the evening or at night. If he then learned that commies were also out that night, he would put the mill in the "danger" position. The mulder agreed with smugglers which setting he used for "danger".
