After an unprecedented transformation, this former locomotive workshop has grown into the cultural hotspot of Tilburg: a library in the centre of the trendy Spoorzone. However, this multi-award-winning building is much more than just an impressive collection of books. Its doors are open from early in the morning until late in the evening. Online or offline, for work or pleasure, chatting or brushing up on your skills: everything in the LocHal flows together seamlessly. Free and wheelchair-accessible, numerous free activities and delicious, cheap coffee: come on in and be inspired!

In 2020 LocHal was declared the ‘Best Library in the Netherlands’ (and was on the short list for ‘Best Public Library of the World’!), but it is internationally known mainly for the many design and architectural awards. With respect to conservation of industrial heritage, LocHal received the Europa Nostra Award. But perhaps the pinnacle is the public award as BNA Building of the Year. The win was paired with the following comment: “The LocHal is a building full of surprises: a hangout for self-employed persons, a setting to drink coffee, a forum for debates. A cool place that is attractive in many ways and may possibly rekindle interest in the book.”
