Part of the walking art tour (choose between 3 or 10 kilometres) goes through ‘De Utrecht’ country estate (be sure to visit and/or climb the Flaestoren observation tower!) and part goes through grounds of the Brabants Landschap, a provincial landscape foundation. Amidst the greenery you will encounter various sculptures, etchings and water colours by the artist, originally from Rotterdam. His graphic works therefore also mirror both the industrial dynamics of Rotterdam and the tranquillity of the Brabant countryside, reflecting farming life and the countryside. The countryside was so close to his heart that he wanted to be buried in Esbeek after his death (in 1984).
A tip for your visit: if you come with a group, book a guide! Not only will you learn everything about Andreas Schotel but you will also discover how the walking tour originated, which artworks you will encounter and the history of the nature reserves through which you will be walking. This is wonderful to combine with an amazing lunch, a pleasant dinner or delicious drink in the museum cafe.
The Andres Schotel walking tour is a multi-cache, a geocache/GPS route that, via various tasks, ultimately takes you to the final location. This is something that attracts a surprising number of families with young children: “We had a wonderful afternoon, the children actually walked 10 kilometres for the first time. Tired but satisfied, we treated ourselves to a delicious ice cream sundae with strawberries ...”
The Andreas-Schotel walking art tour was the winner of the Brabant Style prize in 2017!
