“A charming and pleasant town”
It is not certain whether the origin of the name of the town is Roman or Celtic, but we do know that this strategic location on the Maas already went by the name of County Megen around 1145. A major town fire in 1581 put an end to that strategic significance. Parts of the castle of the Lords of Megen, which was destroyed in that fire, are still used by the Poor Clares or the Order of Saint Clare. Up until the 1970s, the very contemplative nuns had no direct contact with the outside world. Today, it is possible to join the services held in the convent. The monastery of the Order of Friars Minor, Saint Anthony of Padua, is also still inhabited. It is even possible to stay in the monastery and participate in the life of the brothers. The chapel of the ‘Bruurke of Megen’ is also most certainly worth a visit!

For tours, check the website of the Megen Tourist Information Centre. Go on a historical town walk (with or without a guide), visit the Prison Tower or wander through the surrounding countryside. Nature lovers simply must visit ‘De Hof van Lof’ or the Garden of Praise: once a garden of the fathers, it is now a beautiful city garden that contains plants and flowers, all of which still have a liturgical meaning.
