In Helvoirt, the Van Gogh family were acquainted with the aristocratic De Jonge van Zwijnsbergen family, a prominent family closely involved with the Protestant community. Joan de Jonge van Zwijnsbergen (1821-1881) lived in Zwijnsbergen Castle that developed from a farming business in the late Middle Ages into a castle in the 18th century. As elder and churchwarden, he was a member of the church council, of which Theodorus was president. His family owned the distinguished country estate until 1905. The entirety consists of a house, a gardener’s house, farm with outhouses, park and an estate alongside. In 2001, a fire reduced most of the building to ashes, after which it was restored to its former glory.
