There’s something quite unique about the Opwetten Watermill because where else in the world can you find yourself inside one of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings? Van Gogh lived in Nuenen about 135 years ago and frequently passed by the largest mill wheel in the Netherlands, making this watermill one of the artist’s favourite subjects to paint and draw. Nowadays you can not only appreciate the beautiful location but also its delightfully gastronomic, atmospheric and informal restaurant. Or as a British visitor described it: “Delicious food and an awesome location. Combine this with great hospitality and this is the place to be on a sunny afternoon!”

Imagine you’re in the South of France
The restaurant is located on a small island in the Kleine Dommel river, less than ten kilometres from central Eindhoven. On a sunny day on the terrace you can imagine you are in the south of France. The oil mill is the most familiar building from Van Gogh’s famous oil painting made in 1884. The Van Gogh-Roosegaarde cycle path – based on the world-famous painting The Starry Night – is within walking distance. The Opwetten WATERMILL is of course included in the cycling and walking route ‘Out and About with Vincent’ in which eighteen information columns explain many things about Van Gogh’s time in this gem of Brabant.
Multifunctional and authentic
The Opwetten WATERMILL offers a meeting room and various other indoor spaces. Many weddings take place in the beautiful surroundings as this is an official wedding location. Children can have fun in the small playground while the adults can enjoy delicious refreshment on the terrace. Or you can walk around the grounds, open from sunrise to sunset, and experience almost 1000 years of history. You can watch the miller at work on Sundays and he will happily tell you more about the authentic mill and the unspoilt countryside.
Brabant Bicycle Café
The Opwetten Watermill is an official Brabants Fietscafé; a Brabant Bicycle Café. In these bicycle cafés, cyclists are made to feel especially welcome! You can stop by for a delicious bite to eat or a refreshing drink, and make use of facilities such as a repair kit, bicycle pump and e-bike charging station.
