Valkenswaard is home to the only museum in the world that is entirely devoted to the art of lithography and lithographic printing. A centuries-old technique that is still used in ASML’s state-of-the-art microchip machines, just a few miles from Valkenswaard. In addition to art enthusiasts, who visit the Valkenswaard Museum Quarter for a day of culture, the Dutch Museum of Lithography also welcomes expats from the Brainport region. The link to the Netherlands’ most valuable company is highlighted in the permanent exhibition at the museum. Another part of the permanent exhibition is the lithograph that Vincent van Gogh produced of his world-famous ‘The Potato Eaters’.

Valkenswaard Museum Quarter
Culture enthusiasts of all ages will find something at the Museum Quarter, which includes three museums housed in the historical Carolus building. The Dutch Museum of Lithography offers permanent and temporary exhibitions that tell the story of 200 years of lithography. The Falconry and Cigar Makers Museum has a collection looking at falconry between 1650 and 1850, and a second collection offering extensive insight into the development of cigar making in Valkenswaard from 1865 until the industry's decline.

‘An interesting museum! The lady, who was busy making a lithograph, was happy to talk to us about why she found it such a beautiful process. I learned a lot, and also bought a lithograph of Van Gogh to complete the visit!’ said an earlier visitor. In addition to printing demonstrations, you can also attend lithograph printing workshops at the museum workshop, which are particularly popular with schools, teachers and graphic artists/designers. There is also a programme of lectures and guided tours. Please visit the informative museum website for more information.
In November 2021, the art of printing was officially added to the Inventory of Non-Material Heritage of the Netherlands, a fitting tribute to a technique that continues to inspire designers and technicians to create art.
