Artist-in-residence and research centre EKWC in Oisterwijk is the world’s most well-known knowledge and development centre for ceramics. It aims to promote the development of ceramics in art, design and architecture. During guided tours, the EKWC enables visitors to see, hear, feel and smell as many ceramics as possible. To the great enthusiasm of an earlier visitor: ‘It’s amazing that this is all possible; it’s brilliant it exists.’
International and 24/7
Every year, the centre welcomes around 60 artists, designers and architects from across the globe. The centre is therefore set-up for and aimed at an international audience. Here, lovers of art and design, as well as makers (ceramicists, designers and artists) can see how exceptional an artists’ residence is. Artists work here 24 hours a day. EKWC is a workshop, where the developments are shown to the public, something which distinguishes it from a standard museum. ‘The energy hangs in the air here’
During a visit to EKWC, you can see artworks that are on the verge of being moved to a gallery or museum. The EKWC is located at what is perhaps the liveliest spot in Oisterwijk, on the site of the former tannery of the Royal United Leather Factory (KVL). It is a dynamic place that constantly changes and where creation is paramount. And should you work up an appetite during your visit, you can go to the in-house coffee bar and brewery Koffiemiep and enjoy freshly roasted coffee with homemade pastries or delicious lunch dishes.
EKWC shop
The experiments with clay by the artists, designers and architects produce some exceptional works of art as well as technical innovations. You can find a lovely selection of ceramics in the EKWC shop. You can buy lovely items there, such as authentic Oisterwijk tiles, artworks by known and unknown artists as well as original ceramic gifts. Feel free to look around! The shop is open from Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm.
Accessibility
The KVL site is only a five-minute walk from Oisterwijk train station, centrally located between Tilburg, Eindhoven and ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The site is also easy to reach by car. Come to the EKWC and admire the highest quality and advanced amenities in the field of ceramics!
