For the fourteenth time in a row, a film series will also be offered this season; again, spread over autumn and spring and featuring three instead of four films. The theme of this new series builds on that of the previous series: the concrete handling and struggle with freedom, seen as the most characteristic and unique aspect of human existence. And the title ties in with this: Freedom is a verb.

The films of this cycle show that in ordinary, everyday life, the actual, practical handling and implementation of freedom is not at all easy. Freedom is a struggle, often an arduous one. Freedom is work, hard work; in situations, which you often end up in against your will. Situations you would never have chosen if you had been in complete control. Because freedom always unfolds in a wide margin of bondage and dependence. Within that, humans must make their choices of good or evil, true or false, beautiful or ugly, fine or awful. This requires (hard) work. Freedom is a verb.

The film afternoons always start with a short introduction by Philip Verdult, who worked as a philosopher at Radboud University Nijmegen until his retirement. Then the film is screened. After the film there will be a short break, followed by an interactive debriefing led by Philip Verdult. You are free to decide whether you want to attend; however, this is highly recommended. The afternoon, including debriefing, lasts until about 5 pm. Introduction only, film, coffee/tea until about 4.15 pm.

The first film is La fille inconnue, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, 2016. The second on 28 January and the third on 18 March. More information on these will follow. The film screenings always take place in the main hall of the Village Hall. The entrance fee includes a cup of coffee/tea. You can choose whether to attend one, a few or the whole series. Please pay in cash.
